Mazzard Cherry: Champion Tree (Prunus avium)

The Mazzard Cherry (Prunus avium) tree is deciduous, having leaves turn red, orange, and pink in the fall before they fall. They bear both fruit (cherries) and flowers in the springtime, coinciding with the festivities of Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s May Day tradition. It is one of the many varieties of cherry trees found on Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s campus. This particular Mazzard Cherry is more than 200 years old. Many Â鶹ÊÓƵ students enjoy climbing this tree on warm days due to its low branches and the view overlooking the Labyrinth and the playing fields. This tree ranks No. 2 in the Pennsylvania state champion listing 2010.
