The Department of Russian presents "Weaponizing Culture and Narratives in Russian Information Warfare" on February 21, 4:45 pm by Kiril Avramov, Assistant Professor at the Department of Slavic & Eurasian Studies (DSES) and a Fellow at the Intelligence Studies Project (ISP) at the University of Texas at Austin. In the post-Soviet era, marked by significant political and social turbulence, the Kremlin adeptly utilized cultural weaponization as a key component of its contemporary propaganda and disinformation strategies against perceived domestic and international enemies. This lecture examines the role and significance of narrative weaponization and its various functions. It analyzes how narratives are constructed, embedded, and disseminated to shape public perception and influence societal attitudes via multiple vehicles, ranging from broadcast writing to mass entertainment.
